Saint Petersburg, Florida, June 2013 — Bingham's Professional Pest Management has been awarded the contract for Termite Fumigation at Sunken Gardens by the City of St. Petersburg.
Drywood Termite Fumigation at Sunken GardensWhen management officials at the city’s exotic Sunken Gardens attraction noticed evidence of drywood termites, they quickly sent out a Request for Proposal to pest management companies. “The quality of the proposal that [Brian Hawkins, Bingham’s President] presented was much more detailed and professional than that of the other bidders,” commented Bill O’Grady, the Nature Preserve Supervisor at Sunken Gardens since 2000.
Of all the bids received, Bingham's Professional Pest Management was chosen for a variety of reasons, but most notably by impressing the city with an extensive three-year warranty and monitoring program. The city's popular historic tourist destination now will be covered for future drywood termite infestation with regular monitoring and any necessary treatment for three years.
The project was completed in less than the required time due to the diligence and hard work of the 14-man crew from Bingham’s, despite having to wait for businesses to close and a wedding to take place on Saturday. Bingham employees were able to complete the project ahead of schedule by monitoring the gas content in the building overnight and introducing additional gas as needed. The computerized monitoring of this project allowed them to ensure 100% exposure and elimination of drywood termites.
The city's bid process includes extensive insurance and background checks of all crew members; Bingham's passed these tests with flying colors and was able to win the bid based on its professionalism and the length and quality of its warranty.. “Because this property was built in 1926 and has historic significance to the city of St. Petersburg, we have pretty rigorous criteria for contractors to be permitted to work here. We don’t trust just anyone to work on this property. Finding a local company that appreciated that and was able to pass our insurance and background checks, while still meeting our deadline was fortunate for us,” said Nature Preserve Supervisor Bill O’Grady.
This quick and efficient application of termite fumigation was made possible with monitoring by the site’s Project Manager, Bob Bingham, and the Certified Operator, Don Hildebrand. After several hours of monitoring and calculating the ounces-per-million-cubic-foot volume, it was determined that another 160 pounds of fumigant was required to achieve 100% eradication of the target pest in the prescribed amount of time allowed by the customer. "Keeping a close eye on the gas content of the building during the project was necessary to ensure complete coverage," indicated General Manager Irv Carpenter.
The other occupants of the 50,000 square foot building, Great Explorations Museum, Carrabba's Italian Restaurant and Cold Stone Creamery, were closed for a minimal amount of time because of the experience and diligence of Bingham's professional pest management team. “The crew worked fast because they knew we were on a deadline,” noted Sunken Gardens’ O’Grady. “They were able to get the project done faster than we thought was possible.”
“We were honored to be involved in this project,” said Bingham’s President, Brian Hawkins. “Bingham’s has been providing pest control in St. Petersburg since 1964, so helping the city care for one of its iconic attractions is a real honor.”

Fumigation at Sunken Gardens
Bed Bug FumigationSt. Petersburg, FL May 14, 2010 – Now that Bingham’s Professional Pest Management and Fumigation has serviced Touched by an Angel Ministries’ Morning Star Shelter, residents are free to say, “Good night, Don’t let the bed bugs bite” without worry.
The 44-room facility on 62nd Avenue North (off of US 19) that provides transitional and emergency housing for 60 needy people became infested with bed bugs from some of the used furniture donated to the charity.
It became necessary to seek help when guests complained of skin irritation. “We try to provide a safe place for people and help them get a job so they can pay their own way,” says Pastor Jeffery Polhill, President of Touched by an Angel Ministry. “It’s hard for them to be productive when they wake up with welts and itching from bed bug bites,” adds Pastor Polhill.
“We know our fumigation products are effective in these situations, so we thought helping this ministry would be a good use of our resources,” adds Larry Riggs, Director of Training Stewardship for Zythor, the company that provided the gas used for this fumigation.
Crews from Bingham’s Professional Pest Management placed 375,000 cubic feet of tarps on the two-story apartment complex turned shelter Friday, making it look like a giant multi-colored tent that could be seen from US 19 a few blocks away.
Bingham’s Brian Hawkins, along with Zythor’s Larry Riggs, administered two cylinders of the gas. Brian remained on property throughout the night to monitor gas levels, inspect for envelope integrity, and protect the building from intruders.
The residents were able to return to their pest-free homes Saturday evening after the tarps had been removed and all the gas had been exhausted. “The good thing about exterminating pests this way is there is no residue,” says Brian Hawkins. “While spray application can also be effective, it does leave a residue which with residents can come in contact. Plus, it’s impossible to find the location of all infestation in a building this size. The gas gets everywhere, and once it’s done its job and replaced with fresh air, it’s gone – along with the bed bugs.”
St. Petersburg, Florida, April 2012 — Bingham's Professional Pest Management has stepped up to the plate and signed a contract to sponsor the the Pinellas County Television Broadcast of the Tampa Bay Rays on Verizon FIOS and Knology Television for the entire 2012 season.
